Our Water and Environment

The main road in front of our school, Xizang Road, used to be a large open canal. People could catch fish and shrimp there. But in the 1970s, many factories were built nearby, and the canal became polluted. In Wanhua District, Taipei, the government covered the "Special No. 3 Drainage Canal" (originally called Heilongjiang) and turned it into an underground pipe. This change improved the city’s appearance and reduced the exposed, smelly water. However, it also made the natural water body disappear and turned it into a hidden underground canal.

This water issue is very close to us. We live on a small island, Taiwan, which is surrounded by the ocean. The water in these hidden canals eventually flows into the sea. Could this also be one reason for ocean pollution?
